One of the biggest and most spectacular, architectural, herbaceous plants, commonly thought of as 'giant rhubarb'. The plants need a lot of space because it is difficult to restrict their size. Colocasia antiquorum 'Illustris' is also known by the common names; taro and elephant ear.
Elephant ear plants have been used in cultivation for many thousands of years are likely to be native to South-East Asia. They are widely used in tropical plantings due to their stunning big bold leaves that are iconically jungle in effect. Colocasia esculenta are herbaceous perennials that grow at a tremendous rate through the growing season, constantly sending out new foliage creating an impressive tropical display.
The most important thing to know when growing Colocasia antiquorum 'Illustris'is that they love to be spoilt with water and nutrients, keep the colocasia well-watered and feed plenty. In simple terms the more water and food - the bigger the Colocasia. Colocasias grow very well as a marginal plant around ponds and water features, and are perfectly happy grown in shallow water. The elephant ear will be happy in full sun but will tolerate fairly shady situations too.
The Colocasia antiquorum 'Illustris' with it's dark foliage creates a fantastic contrast amongst other jungle plants such as the Hardy Banana (Musa basjoo) or a Ginger Lilly (Hedychium coronarium). For a foliage plant in tropical planting areas or for a touch of tropical around ponds and water features few are more effective than the colocasia esculenta.
Colocasia antiquorum 'Illustris' will die back around the time of the first frosts. At this time the plant can be cut back and the bulbs lifted and stored dry for winter. Or if the soil is well-drained the colocasia can be cut down and mulched over, which should adequately protect the bulb for winter. Alternatively pot them up prior to the weather turning cold and over-winter them indoors as an indoor plant.

Musa basjoo (Japanese hardy banana) has stunning tropical foliage - large bright green leaves arching up from a main stem. An excellent foliage plant to bring a tropical atmosphere to any garden. On mature plants, inedible (believe me I've tried) bananas form. The Musa basjoo is known as the 'hardy banana' but this only applies to the bulb of the plant. The main stem and leaves will usually die back in winter if left unprotected and re-shoot in the following spring. Alternatively pot up Musa basjoo prior to the first frosts and over-winter them indoors as an indoor plant.

Cordyline australis has proven hardy in UK gardens for many years but has proven susceptible in the coldest winters, such as experienced in 2009/2010, but in the milder parts of the UK, cordylines once established have proved wonderfully hardy. This is borne out just by the sheer numbers of these large trees you can see in gardens, on seafronts, and other amenity areas.

The Cordyline australis be warned grows fast and grows tall, so make sure this is allowed for when siting the tree. Cordyline australis can be used as a standalone specimen either planted or potted, or at the back of beds to offer height and structure. It is one of the best choices for very windy/exposed/coastal areas.

The Cordyline requires very little care once established, watering is generally unnecessary and feeding is rarely necessary, unless planted in a container. If containerised water regularly throughout dry spells and feed the Cordyline monthly from late May to early September.

A great point of conjecture with the Cordyline australis is what to do with the old leaves. Some will leave the old leaves hanging down to form a 'skirt' as is done in its natural environment, or our preference is to cut back the old leaves keeping a nice, tidy and clean trunk.

Cordyline australis comes in many different colours, but this green variety does keep better condition and colour than other varieties.

Anyone who owns a fig tree will attest that there are few things more satisfying than growing your own.Also known as Ficus carica, this deciduous spreading shrub or small tree is simple to grow and produces a tasty crop of fruit every year.A Fig Treerequires well-drained soil and idealy full sun to ensure it flourishes and produces a goodquality crop. The Fig tree does benefit from a sheltered spot but it is surprisingly tough and can tolerate some pretty exposed conditions.
Caring for a Fig tree is comes down to watering, feeding and pruning. Look to water theFigTree regularly through dry hot spells, especially if potted,but do not leave waterlogged.
An application of liquid feed every two to four weeks through the growing seasonis alsoadvised to help encourage a good crop and keep healthy foliage.

known as the Windmill Palm or Chusan palm, this hardy and reliable Palm tree is renowned for its tall upright growth habit, creating excellent structure and presence in any environment.
The Chusan palm's glossy green fan-shaped tropical leaves lend themselves perfectly to tropical planting areas. Not only does it work well alongside palms such as the Jelly Palm and the Miniature Chusan Palm, but the palm adds fantastic depth and structure when planted amongst bananas (Musa basjoo) and Elephant's Ear (Colocasia esculenta), creating a wonderful jungle effect.

Although the Trachycarpus fortunei is hardy in just about all situations, its foliage does lose condition when planted out in really exposed environments. The key with growing this variagated Agave is to find a planting environment that is very well drained, and in full-sun. So when planting out add additional grit or gravel to the planting hole to maximise drainage. To prevent the base of the Agave americana marginata sitting wet in winter, when planting try to raise it slightly above the surrounding area, so water runs from it rather than to it.
In the colder parts of the UK and in colder than usual winters try to keep the Agave americana as dry as possible and free from a build-up of snow.
We do recommend growing Agave americana in pots allowing the plant to be shifted into hot spots for the summer months and then moved to a sheltered spot undercover in winter.
When potted give the Agave americana marginata an occasional water through summer and feed 2-3 times. In winter keep the plant as dry as possible, while it is dormant.

To prevent the base of the Agave americana sitting wet in winter, when planting try to raise it slightly above the surrounding area, so water runs from it rather than to it.
In the colder parts of the UK and in colder than usual winters try to keep the Agave americana as dry as possible and free from a build-up of snow.
We do recommend growing Agave americana in pots allowing the plant to be shifted it to hot spots for the summer months and then moved to a sheltered spot in winter.
This approach also takes advantage of a pots free draining nature.
When potted give the Agave americana an occasional water through summer and feed 2-3 times. In winter keep the plant as dry as possible, while it is dormant.

When it comes to choosing an exotic houseplant, there are few more elegant and simple options than the kentia palm tree.Also known as the Howea forsteriana, this striking palm tree is known for its soft arching fronds and erect stems, which give it a beautifully delicate appearance.It is ideal for keeping in a pot and could light up a living room, bedroom or even bathroom.

Livistona nitida is a fast growing fan palm native to north-east Australian. This palm proves hardy in the milder and moderate parts of the UK. In colder parts look to protect in winter by covering.

The large glossy dark green fronds of the Livistona nitida and its sturdy single trunk make it a natural focal point. Very effective in a container when placed in a pot on a patio or could even be used as an interesting feature in a courtyard.

Livistona nitida requires little upkeep, other than a monthly application of foliar feed from mid-April to September and a little pruning back old fronds in spring and autumn.

Carpobrotus edulis is very vigorous and an excellent choice for ground covering in dry gardens or for trailing over rockeries or rock walls. Carpobrotus edulis loves well-drained soil and full sun and will thrive in the most windy/coastal conditions.
Carpobrotus edulis does prove hardy in coastal areas in the UK and certainly in the milder parts of the UK, but can be susceptible to heavy frosts and certainly snow. The best way to manage Carpobrotus edulis where protection is necessary is to keep the plant potted and then give a sheltered position in winter, ideally in a greenhouse, where the plant should not be watered.

The Cordyline requires very little care once established, watering is generally unnecessary and feeding is rarely necessary, unless planted in a container. If containerised water regularly throughout dry spells and feed the Cordyline monthly from late May to early September.
A great point of conjecture with the Cordyline australis is what to do with the old leaves. Some will leave the old leaves hanging down to form a 'skirt' as is done in its natural environment, or our preference is to cut back the old leaves keeping a nice, tidy and clean trunk.
Cordyline australis comes in many different colours, but this green variety does keep better condition and colour than other varieties.
